MITSUBISHI CARISMA (1995 - )
TYPE:
4-Door Saloon, 5-Door Hatchback.
SIZE: 4435 x 1695
RELIABILITY: Some minor trim niggles but promises Japanese reliability, service history a bonus rather than a necessity if the price is right.
Cheap service 9,000 mile 1 year . Easy to work on. Some minor trim niggles, Notchy reverse needs adjustment only. Expect predictable Mitsubishi reliability provided service history is kept up to date.
VERDICT:µµmmm
HISTORY: DEC 1995 Carisma front wheel drive Hatchback range launched in UK: 1.6 GL and GLX (89 bhp) and 1.8 GLX and GLS (114 bhp), all with 5-speed gearbox or optional 4-speed electronic automatic transmission, independent suspension, power assisted steering and disc/drum brakes (optional ant-lock brakes with rear disc brakes on 'Diamond' models). Equipment: tinted glass, central locking, immobiliser, airbag, driver's seat height adjustment, tilt-adjustable steering column, split fold rear seats, 4-speaker stereo system; GLX and GLS models also have electric windows and mirrors; 1.8 GLS has alloy wheels, colour-keyed mirrors and centre armrest. 'Diamond' optional pack includes electric sunroof, front passenger airbag.
SEP 1996 Saloon range launched in UK with specifications and equipment as existing Hatchbacks.
MAY 1997 1.9 TD (90 bhp) GL and GLX models launched in UK.
OCT 1997 1.8 GDi (direct petrol injection, 125 bhp) models launched in UK, 1.6 models now have uprated 100 bhp engines. Automatic versions now have 'learning' transmission system. Revisions: all models have passenger airbag, bodyside mouldings, electronic trip meter, timer on heated rear window, upgraded upholstery; GLS models have automatic air conditioning and side airbags.
JUL 1998 Special edition 1.6 'Maui' Hatchback launched.
COMMENTS: European built in partnership with Volvo is dull to drive and anything but 'Charismatic'. Bland but inoffensive, its S40 cousin will however seat a family of 5 comfortably.
European built in partnership with Volvo, but feels like a routine Japanese car to drive. Appealing styling and interiors, smooth engines and big boot. Ride is poor and steering lifeless, but it's cheap to run.
