HISTORY: APR 1993 306 Front wheel drive 5-door Hatchback launched in UK: XN/XL/XR 1.4 (75 bhp); XL/XR/XT 1.6 (90 bhp); and XT 1.8 (108 bhp), all with 5-speed gearbox, independent suspension and rack-and-pinion steering (power assisted steering in XT models, optional in XL and XR). 1.4 and 1.6 have disc/drum brakes; XT 1.8 has discs (anti-lock brakes optional on all models). Equipment: alarm/immobiliser (not XN), rev counter (not XN), remote-adjustable mirrors, cloth trim, 4-speaker audio system; XL has tinted glass, electric sunroof, central locking, split rear seats, RDS radio; XR has electric front windows; XT has twin headlamps, electric rear windows, heated electric mirrors, height and lumbar-adjustable driver's seat and 6-speaker audio.
JUN 1993 XNd 1.9, XLd 1.9 and XRd 1.9 (70 bhp) is launched in the UK.
JUL 1993 XRdt 1.9 and XTdt 1.9 (92 bhp) launched with power assisted steering.
AUG 1993 4-speed automatic transmission now optional on XT 1.8.
OCT 1993 XR and XT models now have deadlocks on doors.
JAN 1994 2.0 XSi (123 bhp) and S-16 16 valve (155 bhp) 3-door launched with power assisted steering, rear spoiler, central locking, electric front windows and mirrors and sports seats. S-16 has anti-lock brakes and alloy wheels.
FEB 1994 XN 1.4, XL 1.4, XS 1.6, XNd 1.9 and 1.9 D Turbo 3-door models launched in UK. XS 1.6 and 1.9 D Turbo have power assisted steering, tinted glass, body coloured bumpers, rear spoiler, fog lamps, sports seats, 3-spoke steering wheel and electric front windows.
APR 1994 Limited (400) 1.6 'Roland Garros' launched.
May 1994 2.0 Cabriolet (123 bhp) launched with power assisted steering, anti-lock brakes, electric hood/windows, sports seats, security system and alloy wheels.
JUN 1994 Special edition 'Mardi Gras' model launched in the UK.
AUG 1994 XLdt 1.9 Hatchback (92 bhp) launched. Revisions: all models have front seatbelt pre-tensioners; petrol models from XL upwards have keypad immobiliser; petrol models from XR upwards and diesel models from XLdt upwards have driver's airbag.
OCT 1994 Sedan Saloons launched: 1.6 SL (90 bhp); 1.8 SR (103 bhp); 1.9SLdt; SRdt and STdt (all 92 bhp); and 2.0 ST (123 bhp), all mechanically similar to existing Hatchbacks and all with front fog lamps, airbag, split folding rear seats, remote central locking, immobiliser, deadlocks and RDS audio. SRdt has rear screen wipe, electric front windows, height and lumbar adjustment on driver's seat. ST models have alloy wheels, electric heated windows, heated electric mirrors, rear head restraints and 6-speaker audio.
DEC 1994 Special edition 'Alpine' 1.4 3-door, 1.4 5-door, 1.9 3-door and 1.9 5-door launched.
JAN 1995 Sedan 2.0 ST automatic launched in the UK.
MAY 1995 Limited edition (of 150) 2.0 'Roland Garros' Cabriolet automatic launched in the UK.
OCT 1995 1.4 and 1.9D Base Sedan models launched in UK. 2.0 XSi now has anti-lock brakes, alloy wheels and a leather-trimmed steering wheel.
DEC 1995 Special edition 'Slalom' models launched in the UK. Special edition 1.9D Turbo 'S' launched, slightly higher than standard 1.9 D Turbo.
FEB 1996 1.9 D Turbo 5 door launched in UK. Revisions: 1.4 XN now fitted with keypad immobiliser; XN/XL models now have airbag; automatic transmission now optional on 2.0 Cabriolet.
MAR 1996 1.8 XR Automatic and 1.8 SR Sedan automatic launched in the UK.
JUN 1996 Special editions: 5-door 1.4 'Genoa', 1.6 'Spinnaker' and 1.9 D Turbo 'Spinnaker' launched.
JUL 1996 GTi-6 2.0 16v 3-door (167 bhp) launched in the UK with 6-speed gearbox and equipment similar to S-16 plus uprated disc brakes and restyled alloy wheels. 2.0 Roadster launched in the UK, similar to Cabriolet plus colour-keyed removable hard top. 1.4 Style and 1.9D Style Hatchbacks launched.
DEC 1996 Special 'Meridian' 1.6 and 1.9 D Turbo introduced.
COMMENTS: The 306 remains one of the best used buy small family ranges thanks to its excellent handling and ride and practical interior layout. There is a 306 for everyone from no-frills family Hatchbacks to roomy Estates, desirable Sports models and Cabriolets.
