HISTORY: NOV 1997 Avensis front wheel drive Saloon, Hatchback and Estate range launched. All models have 5-speed gearbox (4-speed automatic transmission option on 1.8 GS/GLS, 2.0 GLS/CDX), power assisted steering, anti-lock brakes, driver/passenger and side airbags, central locking, immobiliser and electric door mirrors (heated except on S). GS also has metallic paint, 15" alloy wheels, electric sunroof and air conditioning. GLS also has electric rear windows, body coloured external details, front fog lamps, mud flaps and automatic climate control (2.0 only). CDX also has leather trim and alloy wheels.
FEB 1999 SE Limited Edition 1.6 Saloon and 1.8 Hatch available as S except air conditioning, 15" alloy wheels and CD player.
COMMENTS: The Avensis takes up where the Carina E left off but now appeals to more than "middle England" - It is roomier, better looking and more refined. Still, sadly, not the first choice for individualists.
