Automatic Transmission Fluid levels

To test this level you would normally have the engine running so that the system can soak up the oil and the remainder in the reservoir can be measured. Also make sure that the car is level when checking as this can alter the reading on the dipstick.

The dipstick should be located on the side of the gearbox and can be found by consulting your manual. As in checking your engine oil remove the dipstick and wipe clean with a rag. Replace and remove again to measure the fluid level. Always check what type of fluid to fill the reservoir with and never substitute with something else. Fill with the proper ATF(Automatic transmission fluid) until the level is on maximum and replace cover and switch off engine. As with engine oil never fill the fluid unless the level is below the minimum level and never fill to over the maximum level. You will probably benefit from a small funnel to fill the reservoir without spillage as this must be done via the narrow tube that held the dipstick. Any noticeable increase in ATF consumption should be checked out by a qualified mechanic.

Also check you fluid for colour (It should be red or pink) If the fluid is brown or has a burnt smell then have it checked out by a qualified mechanic.
